The knowledge of
Equatorial Guinea Lepidoptera and particularly of those in the Isle of Bioko is
well documented (Schultze et. al. 1923; Viejo, 1984; Olano y Marcos, 1993; Spearman et. al 2000), and is completed by important works of
general nature on afrotropical Lepidoptera (d’Abrera, 1997; Ackery et. al. 1995; Larsen, 2005; Williams, 2008).
The Lubá
volcanic caldera represents the only sample of monsoon forest in Equatorial
Guinea. The first data on the invertebrate fauna in the interior of the
Scientific Reserve of the Lubá Caldera were obtained during the Polytechnic
University of Madrid scientific expeditions in the years 2005 and 2007 (Prieto
y Martín, 2008; Martín y Cobos, 2010). Both expeditions corresponded to the
projects of the Spanish National Plan of (I+D+i)
Research+Development+Innovation, CGL2005-23762E and CGL2006 -27110-E/BOS.
Of a total of
1099 insects collected on both expeditions, 546 correspond to Lepidoptera. The
first results on the Papilionidae, Pieridae and Daneidae families are shown in
the present work.
